Remove hiss, hum and room noise with spectral gating. Teach it the noise from a quiet moment, set the strength, and A/B the result — all on your device.

How to remove background noise from a recording
- Load your file — voice memo, podcast take, interview, old tape transfer.
- Mark the noise — drag-select a second where nobody is talking (or click auto-find). The tool learns the exact frequency fingerprint of your hiss or hum.
- Reduce — pick a strength and process. Flip the A/B switch to compare cleaned and original.
- Export — WAV (lossless) or MP3.
Spectral gating, explained
This is the same architecture as the noise reduction in serious audio editors: the recording is sliced into overlapping windows, each window is transformed into ~1,000 frequency bands, and every band is compared against the learned noise profile. Bands hovering near the noise floor get attenuated; bands carrying real signal pass through untouched. Because the gate operates per-frequency, it can pull hiss out from around a voice rather than just turning everything down.
What it can and can't fix
- Great on: steady hiss, fan/AC rumble, electrical hum, room tone, preamp noise.
- Useless on: sudden sounds — clicks, traffic, dogs, other voices. Nothing 'learnable' about those; cut them out with the trimmer instead.
- Tip: the cleanest results come from the lowest strength that works. 100% strength on a noisy file produces watery, robotic artifacts — leaving a whisper of room tone almost always sounds more natural.
FAQ
How does the noise reducer work?
Spectral gating: it learns the frequency fingerprint of your noise from a noise-only section, then attenuates each frequency band whenever its level falls near that fingerprint — leaving louder content untouched.
What noise does it remove best?
Constant noise: hiss, fans, AC, hum, room tone. It can't remove unpredictable sounds like clicks, traffic or other people talking.
Why does high strength sound watery?
Aggressive gating cuts frequencies that overlap your voice, creating "musical noise." Start near 50–60% and use the lowest strength that makes noise unobtrusive.
Is my recording uploaded?
No — the entire analysis runs in your browser. Sensitive audio never leaves your device.
